Sock Drive March 1-31, 2010 Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program invites businesses, faith groups, schools and other organizations to participate in our annual Sock Drive by collecting new white socks. Our doctors, nurses and other staff will the socks collected to the homeless men, women, and children we care for in greater Boston. Why Socks? Access to shoes and socks is often limited for the homeless men and women living in shelters and on the streets. Common infections such as athlete’s foot thrive when damp socks are worn for days or weeks at a time. Frostbite is common in colder months, sometimes resulting in toe amputations. The best way to prevent such conditions is to keep feet clean and dry – very difficult if you spend your days outside.
